Boat Owner Guide
Buying a boat is a big decision made largely on what you can see above the water. A pre-purchase underwater survey fills in the half you can’t — turning an unknown into documented fact before your money changes hands.
A diver documents the parts of the boat a dockside walkthrough can’t reach: the true condition of the hull and bottom paint, the props and running gear, and the anodes. You see growth, obvious damage, and general condition for yourself, on video — insight that’s hard to get any other way without hauling the boat.
For a significant purchase, a complete marine survey — often including a haul-out — is still the gold standard, and an underwater inspection doesn’t replace it. What it does brilliantly is come first: a quick, in-water look that can confirm a boat is worth pursuing, or surface a concern early, before you invest in a full survey. It’s the smart, low-cost first step.
However you use it, the footage and condition report are yours — useful in negotiation, helpful to your surveyor, and reassuring to you. Knowing what’s under the waterline before you buy means no expensive surprises after.
