The water
Old Tampa Bay is the shallow northern arm of the bay system, and it has the longest human record of any water in Pinellas. The Tocobaga held a significant village at its head, and the shell mounds survive at what is now Philippe Park.
In 1835, Odet Philippe established a farm beside that old village site — generally credited as the first permanent European settlement on the peninsula, and the region's introduction to grapefruit.
The upper bay's character is the direct consequence of its shape. It is warmer than the lower bay and turns over far more slowly, which pushes the balance of fouling away from hard shell and toward algae and slime. In a hot, still summer that can put a real drag layer on a clean hull inside a few weeks.

Cove Cay Marina, ClearwaterCove Cay Marina lies about 6.5 miles from Clearwater Pass, with Dunedin Pass roughly 8.5 miles off. It is a long way from any inlet, and that distance is the single best predictor of how fast a hull fouls here.
This is some of the least-flushed water we work. Warm, slow, and nutrient-loaded through summer, it favours algae over barnacle and can put a real drag layer on a clean hull in a matter of weeks.
A private marina with a settled fleet gives us the most useful thing possible: the same hulls over time, so the cadence gets sharper with every visit.

Things worth knowing
Distance to the nearest inlet is the strongest single predictor of fouling rate. At 6.5 miles from Clearwater Pass, with Dunedin Pass a further 8.5 miles off, this berth sits largely outside it.

Growth in Pinellas is not linear, and at 6.5 miles in the seasonal swing is at its most extreme, because still water heats fastest. A cadence set for August will be wrong in January.
Bare metal fouls faster than painted surface everywhere on this coast, and even in slow water it leads the hull. Props, shafts and struts usually signal the timing before the paint does.
Manatees, dolphins and grass beds share Old Tampa Bay. Method matters as much as schedule — media matched to the paint, and nothing scoured into the bottom.
With 366 reviews it is one of the quieter entries on our list — smaller fleets tend to mean more stable, more predictable fouling.

Upper-bay water is warmer and turns over more slowly than the lower bay. That shifts the balance toward algae and slime rather than heavy shell.
Summer is the pressure test. Warm, still, nutrient-loaded water can put a meaningful drag layer on a clean hull in a matter of weeks.
Soft growth is forgiving if you stay ahead of it and punishing if you don't — once it mats, removing it takes more abrasion than the paint wants to give.
